The Real Japan is Still Here.

Let Us Take You There.

Our Approach

Most of Japan's traditions are not disappearing because they lack beauty.

They are disappearing because not enough people know they exist.

Hitamichi exists to change that.

We take small groups of curious, meaningful travellers deep into the rural north of Ibaraki Prefecture — one of Japan's most culturally rich and least visited regions — and connect them directly with the tea masters, lacquer artists, sake brewers, shrine priests, and doll makers who are quietly keeping centuries of tradition alive.

Our Tours

Choose your own journey. Every tour is intimate, English-guided, and built around the people and traditions that make northern Ibaraki extraordinary.

  • A group of eight diverse people standing together indoors, smiling at the camera, with shelves of bottles, Japanese certificates, and traditional items in the background.

    Half-Day

A single deep experience — roll tea with a master, explore an ancient shrine, or taste sake at a 150-year-old family brewery. Perfect as a standalone or combined with another experience.

  • People participating in a traditional tea ceremony or tea leaf processing workshop inside a wooden structure, with some handling dried tea leaves on a large wooden table.

    Full-Day

Two or more experiences woven into a narrative journey through northern Ibaraki. Morning in the tea fields, afternoon with a sake brewer. Or a sacred mountain hike followed by a local food tour.

  • A small traditional Japanese shrine with a wooden exterior and open doors, located in a wooded area. Inside, a priest in white and red robes performs a ritual as three visitors watch.

    Multi-Day

A slow, immersive journey through the region — meeting the farmers, artisans, and community members who carry these traditions. Custom designed around your group and interests.

  • Group of people harvesting rice in a field during the daytime with green hills and houses in the background.

    Educational Groups

Purpose-driven programs for international schools, IB CAS groups, and universities. Built around real local challenges, co-created with community partners and government.
